2007 ACTSmas!

The youth club and some professionals came together and planned for a wonderful ACTSmas party for the kids that had been attending the ImpACTS and Hope for Kids classes. They shall be rewarded for studying hard!

El club de jóvenes y algunos profesionales se juntaron y planificaron una linda fiesta ACTSmas! para los niños que participaron en nuestras clases de inglés en ImpACTS y Hope for Kids. Ellos fueron premiados por haber estudiado ¡muy duro!

2007 Project ImpACTS & Hope for Kids

Another new cycle began on the first Saturday of October 2007. Some kids from the previous cycle and new kids as well but this time more kids are accepted because of the increase of local volunteers.
We are thankful to the volunteers who are giving their time and having the heart of passion to teach these kids.

Un nuevo ciclo empezó el primer sábado de octubre del 2007. Algunos niños de nuestros ciclos anteriores y también nuevos niños que esta vez han sido aceptados por el aumento de voluntarios locales. Estamos muy agradecidos con los voluntarios que están dando su tiempo y su corazón lleno de pasión para enseñar a estos niños.

2007 Gen ACTS with Aldea Infantiles SOS

In September 2007, Generation ACTS Club International(S) signed an agreement with the Aldeas Infantiles SOS(Peru) to improve the education of the children living in the villages of this organisation.
Gen ACTS gave out 25 scholarships to the children, from 6 to 12 years old, who came for assessment. These children will receive free English classes and materials under our ImpACTS and Hope for Kids projects.

En setiembre del 2007, Generation ACTS Club International (S) firmó un acuerdo con Aldeas Infantiles SOS (Perú) para mejorar la educación de los niños que viven el las aldeas de esta organización. Gen ACTS ofreció 25 becas para los niños, de entre las edades de 6 a 12 años, quienes vinieron para ser evaluados. Estos niños recibirán clases de inglés gratuita y materiales bajo nuestros proyectos ImpACTS y Hope for Kids.

2007 Project Hope for Kids

After the mid year break, we embarked on a totally new project with the help of our ACTSpedition volunteer, Theresa Ng Eng Tze. This project is targeted for kids from 6-8 years, with the concept of learn through play.

At each different period of time of the class, kids get to enjoy learning with lots of fun:)

2007, Proyecto Hope for Kids
Después de las vacaciones de medio año, nos embarcamos en un proyecto totalmente nuevo con la ayuda de nuestra voluntaria en ACTSpeditions, Theresa Ng Eng Tze. Este proyecto va dirigido a niños desde los 6 a 8 años de edad, con el concepto de aprendizaje a través del juego. En cada diferente periodo de tiempo de clases, los niños disfrutan aprender con mucha diversión.

2007 Painting of PRONOEIS

The youths were divided into 3 groups. Each group is in charge of one PRONOEI in Huaycan, a temporally educational center for kids below 6 whose parents couldn't afford to send them to formalized kindergarten. With little resources that each PRONONEI has, our team of youths decided to create charts and provide extra materials for the coordinator in each PRONOEI. Let's see what they had done!:)

Los jóvenes fueron divididos en 3 grupos. Cada grupo estaba a cargo de un PRONOEI en Huaycán, centro educativo temporal para niños menores de 6 años cuyos padres no pueden pagar para llevarlos a un nido o colegio inicial formal. Los PRONOEI cuentan con escasos recursos por lo que nuestro equipo de jóvenes decidió elaborar carteles educativos y proveer materiales extra para cada coordinador de cada PRONOEI. ¡Veamos los que hicieron!

International Volunteer - Ng Eng Tze's volunteering experience

On the 21st of June 2007, I arrived in Lima, Peru to begin my two months of volunteering with Gen-Acts. I was terribly excited but had little expectations of the state of development in the country. Looking back, I am guilty of being oblivious and ignorant of South American countries. Before discovering about this volunteer project through the Internet, I can safely claim that I knew zilch about Peru. Not even about Machu Picchu. Hence, it was a huge step for me to take, coming to a foreign country all by myself. Nevertheless, this journey proved to be an experience of a lifetime.

I was involved in a few projects in Lima. During my two months there, I helped out with ACAPAN, taught English to children at AGAPE and Kids Alive! as well as youths in the Youth Alive! program, helped to start up a new project called Hope For Kids, and helped to organize a painting project in Huaycan.

Este viaje llegó a ser una experiencia de toda la vida.Estuve involucrada en algunos proyectos en Lima. Durante mis dos meses allá, participé junto a ACAPAN, enseñando inglés a los niños de AGAPE y Kids ALIVE! , también enseñé Inglés a los jóvenes del programa Youth ALIVE! .Colaboré en el inicio de un nuevo proyecto llamado “Hope for Kids”, y en organizar un proyecto para pintar escuelitas en el asentamiento humano de Huaycán.

International Volunteer - Huang Peiwen's volunteering experience

To the team of Generation Acts club, my name is Huang Peiwen. Like the team, I am from Singapore and I had come to Peru to travel and to do volunteering work. In May-June 2007, I had the opportunity to work with the Generation Acts club in its activities. I would like to describe my experience with the team in Peru.

During my one month involvement with the generation acts club, I taught English to a group of young children who lived in a home called Agape. The children lived in a small community under the arms of social workers who looked after them and ensure that they attend school.

It was a rewarding experience doing teaching in Peru. Everyday I am learning how I can improve my teaching skills to these children. They are extraordinary children, the group of children who needs more attention since they come from broken families. There were language barriers between me and the children, so we communicate with one another through simple combination of Spanish and English. However, with our little understandings of each other, we managed to bond together during lesson times through songs and games during lesson breaks. It was a meaningful volunteer program to me as I learn more about the Peruvian education program and managing the young kids at home.

Everyday I see meaningful activities unfolding in the house of the Gen Acts Club. The lives of the team’s hectic work during the weekday give way to giving free education to the less privilege youths during the weekends. Children and youth activities are conducted during the weekend to enable the Peruvians a chance to develop their moral and social attitudes in a safe and friendly environment. I also see how the strengths of each team members complement with what they do. The leaders of Kids Alive club, Youth Alive club, and the Sunday church see different and unique leadership skills possess by the team. I see how the lives of the people changed when they entered into the “House of Hope”, a place where they can improve and embrace their lives better through the support of the team and one another.

I was touched by the act of love the Gen Acts Team have to the people who come from all walks of lives. I saw how genuine their interests on people and how they really want to help make Peru a better place to live in.

I thank them for giving me the opportunity to be part of their program. To be able to learn to appreciate the little things in our life, and to learn to contribute what we can to the society. This society perhaps needs different perspectives that Singaporeans may be able to offer new help to them. Likewise, I also see how Singaporeans can learn from the Peruvians to build a better place at home. The Peruvians have a culture of treating one another with respect, and I think it’s important that as a volunteer, we learn to help and in the process learn the goods from the people too.

Voluntaria Internacional - La experiencia de voluntariado de Huang Peiwen
Les agradezco por haberme dado la oportunidad de ser parte de su programa. Por permitirme ser capaz de aprender a apreciar las pequeñas cosas en nuestras vidas, y aprender a contribuir en lo que podemos a nuestra sociedad. Esta sociedad talvez necesite perspectivas diferentes que los singapurenses pueden ser capaces de ofrecer como nueva ayuda. Asimismo, también veo como los singapurenses pueden aprender de los peruanos a edificar un mejor lugar en casa. Los peruanos tienen una cultura de tratarse uno y otro con respeto, y creo que es importante que como voluntaria aprenda a ayudar y en el proceso tambien aprender lo bueno de la gente.

International Volunteer - Yeo Suan Wei's volunteering experience

Volunteer work from 8-20 May 2007

"I spent two weeks in Lima volunteering with two different organizations that were introduced to me through Generation Acts. The first involved working with Zoila, who headed ACAPAN (social welfare organization dedicated to improving social welfare of kids)

Zoila is a feisty 69 year old lady with a lot more passion and energy than a lot of yuppies I know. Her organization is dedicated to improving the lives of kids living in Huaycan, a shantytown 45 mins outside of Lima. They started small, by feeding kids a daily breakfast, and gifts on special occasions like Christmas and then moved on by taking them on excursions and involving the parents. Zoila speaks about as much English as I do Greek, so we had to make do with my mangled Spanish. We got along really well and I helped her update and translate (into English) some presentations and website. I also helped with sorting and packing of the breakfasts as well as toy donations for the kids and got to make a trip out to Huaycan with some of her committee members! I don't know how we connected so well, given that on the surface we had little in common, but we had several good conversations and even took walks in around the neighborhood.

I really enjoyed working with Zoila and the fact that she fed me every two hours with good home cooked Peruvian food certainly didn't hurt. Seriously though, she inspired me to believe that you can change the world, one kid at a time.

My other part of the volunteer project involved teaching kids English at Agape Children's Home. Which was a lot tougher than it sounded. Largely because the kids were more ADD than me and spoke Spanish at breakneck speed! I am not sure how much English they learned, but we had a blast! We sang songs, danced, played marbles, I chased them around and before I knew it, it was time for me to go.

My time volunteering in Peru came with its ups and downs but I would do it again in a heartbeat. It offered me an insight into the real Peru and I made some wonderful friends Ironically, my Spanish improved dramatically in my last two weeks in Perú.

2007 Project ImpACTS with Agape & ACAPAN

Year 2007 was another mile stone for our ImpACTS project. We had decided to open up the club house where kids would come to receive classes. In addition, with the new set up of Kids ALIVE! program- where kids will benefit from the educational resources, Diamond methodology and environment for learning.

El año 2007 fue otro gran punto de crecimiento para nuestro proyecto ImpACTS. Decidimos abrir nuestra casa como club para que los niños puedan recibir clases en ella. Además, establecimos el nuevo programa KIDS ALIVE! donde los niños se beneficiarán de nuestros recursos educativos, metodología Diamante y un buen ambiente para su aprendizaje.
